Materia Medica and Special Therapeuticcs of the New Remedies (2 Volumes)
Originally published in 1864 and known simply as 'New Remedies'. The book was a record of provings of 44 indigenous remedies (Gelsemium, Cimicifuga, Podophyllum, Collinsonia, etc) and clinical cases in which the remedy was successfully used.
The original work was enlarged in a second edition of 1144 pages in 1867 titled: THE MATERIA MEDICA OF THE NEW REMEDIES; THEIR BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION, MEDICAL HISTORY, PATHOGENIC EFFECTS AND THEIR THERAPEUTIC APPLICATION IN PRACTICE.
By 1873, 80 new remedies were added and included were only characteristic symptoms, without the provings and descriptions of the remedy.
In the 4th edition in 1875, called THE MATERIA MEDICA AND SPECIAL THERAPEUTICS OF THE NEW REMEDIES, the author "at the behest of the profession" re-introduced the material he took out of the 2nd edition to prepare the 3rd.
The 4th edition was offered in two volumes "Symptomology" and "Therapeutics". The Symptomology volume is a materia medica derived from the provings - a listing of symptoms set out in the Hahnemann schema. The "Therapeutics" volume presents the history and botanical description of the remedy and cured cases using the remedy. The information in the second volume is based on the lectures Hale gave at the Hahnemann Medical College of Chicago during 1873-74.
