In recent years the bird remedies have swooped down, conquering homeopathic practice. They are remedies for our times and are indicated in people who, like the Lanthanides, are seeking freedom and self-realisation yet at the same time have a strong sense of duty towards their family. They tend to sacrifice themselves to this task, consequently feeling too restricted by their duties.
Physically this is most often expressed in stubborn states of tension in the neck, shoulder and chest, together with an inner feeling of tenseness and restlessness.
After a comprehensive introduction to the general characteristics by which bird patients can be identified, the author presents a series of impressive case histories, some with severe pathology. Along with the familiar Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) and Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus disciplinatus), there are also descriptions of unfamiliar bird remedies such as Red Kite (Milvus milvus), Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), Chicken (Gallus gallus), European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) and Magpie (Pica pica).
Over 20 different bird remedies are sketched by the author, who has successfully used them all in his homeopathic general medical practice. He also provides insights into unconventional methods of remedy selection, relying on the patient’s gestures, pictures and sensations.
“The confident feeling for bird remedies and the profound knowledge of this new remedy group are so pronounced in Markus Kuntosch that I can warmly recommend this book to any open-minded homeopath. He prescribes the remedies with astonishing precision and the cases are so outstanding that such results could scarcely have been obtained with other remedies.” - Ulrich Welte, MD homeopath

This is a most fascinating book which lays so many eggs for us to hatch as we familiarise ourselves with this new material.
We are not asked to follow a new guru or a new system of homeopathy. We are invited to learn about 23 remedies, many of them new and many with unfamiliar names.
The descriptions are clear and easy to follow. The themes are explained in an introductory chapter. I fear it may be hard to recall all the new Latin names. Here they are (below) in English (see note 1).
What is amazing is not only the dedication, scholarship and clarity of style of author Markus Kuntosch, but the fact that he appears to have seen 36 patients who required all these bird remedies. Each remedy is introduced through the cases of patients with persuasive details that a bird remedy is indicated. Yet he writes with realism, modesty and style. There is no evidence that this is a translation; the text reads smoothly.
There is much reliance of a new way of using a doctrine of signatures. For example, a frightened seven-year-old fears that "Burglars might kidnap him, beat him in the pan and fry him." His remedy is chicken egg yolk - Ovi vitellus. The patients literally display physical gestures or features or psychological tendencies of birds.
There are new themes to consider, for example: "The patient wants to fly and moves her arms like wings but is stopped by an external force and held back on the ground." There are images of claws "as sharp as a knife pressing into my shoulder." And the patient said "she had a wing down" like a bird who has a lame wing.
The book is beautifully produced on rich paper, larger than normal octavo with countless full colour photographs and other illustrations.
