Waterworld is a beautifully presented hard-cover book by Victoria Bodrogi, a Hungarian homeopath, in which she discusses in great detail the fish kingdom and explores 19 fish remedies that till now have not been presented in a publication of their own.
The book starts with background information common to the fish kingdom, and explains the origin and development of fish as species. This introduction to the species, in which she discusses the evolution of fish, their physiology and emotions, is detailed and interesting. She also briefly mentions fish in relation to mythology, astrology and culture, which may enhance the reader's understanding regarding the possible themes of the fish kingdom.
The chapter on the symptoms you might expect to see in a patient needing a fish remedy is very helpful to the homeopath who would like to explore using the fish remedies in practice. The physical symptoms and mental/emotional symptoms that would point towards a fish remedy are clearly explained, as well as an attempt to place the many different types of fish into groups and attribute a common theme to each group. Furthermore, the author describes 19 fish remedies in separate chapters with their own detailed background material, proving information, materia medica and some successful cases.
Good points are: the book is well-structured and organised, with clearly defined chapters and an index with page numbers that allows the reader to easily find the information that may be of interest. The text is well written and key words are enhanced in bold script, allowing the reader to quickly find the information in the text that they might be searching for. The symptoms common to the fish remedies provide a very interesting read, and each fish remedy is also very well explained with interesting background information and a picture showing the fish in its natural habitat.
Should you get this? If you enjoy thematic prescribing and exploring remedies according to their kingdoms, then you will enjoy this book. It is interesting, with an abundance of information relating to the fish kingdom, the themes of the species and a useful materia medica for each of the 19 fish remedies. Getting to know the fish kingdom will surely enhance your understanding of the many fish remedies and allow you to think outside the realms of the better-known remedies and explore prescribing these interesting remedies.

Having agreed to do this review for New Homeopath, I was delighted when Waterworld arrived, for not only was it beautifully present but also the subject matter seemed particularly appropriate. My adventure into the rigours of conducting a homeopathic proving as of Red Sea Sand collected from the very edge of the shoreline and still in the lengthy process of being written up and published; the siren call of the sea whetting my appetite for more ever since.
Waterworld by Victoria Bodrogi is an elegant and pleasingly tactile book with a glossy goldfish swirling across its cover and vivid illustrations. There is a good amount of detailed information about the subject matter, though it is tantalising. Much information has yet to be gleaned from this under-represented kingdom, both homeopathically and even in general knowledge. As David Attenborough claimed, we probably know more about the surface of the moon that we do about the teeming life beneath our oceans. This humble fact is not lost on Viktoria, and makes the launching of this book's attempt to catch our attention, raise our interest and stimulate further consideration of the fascinating and mysterious life of fish all the more important. Undaunted, Victoria has made a small but significant splash into this vast territory and I trust the homeopathic ripples will continue to spread.
There is a clear and concise introduction by Jenni Tree, who suggests that Waterworld, focusing on the kingdom of fish - salt, brackish and fresh water vertebrates - is a fitting companion to Jo Evans's Sea Remedies, which explores the invertebrates. Together, they offer homeopaths a rare glimpse into this watery existence, and the remedies we could be using into the future for the good of all.
This book reminds us that, like fish, we humans are vertebrates sharing a common ancestry from the emergence of bacteria in fresh water 2.5 billion years ago. Over 400 million years ago, the first back-boned, fish-like creatures evolved. Some continued to evolve in the water whereas we ventured out onto dry land. Seemingly, we have hardly looked back.
Victoria makes a valiant attempt to come to grips with these slippery subjects. The earlier chapters are concerned with laying down our existing knowledge of fish and appropriately, an appreciation of water. We are utterly dependent on water for life itself, and water covers 71% of our blue planet.
We explore the different evolutionary processes of fish with distinct yet varied anatomical adaptations and behaviours. In order to establish some form of homeopathic differentiation, Viktoria identifies two groups: predators and non-predators which are then each subdivided into three. This classification process is basic for now but is a useful initial tool.
As the author explains, fish make up nearly half of all the known backbone-processing creatures on Earth, but we are introduced to just 19 homeopathic fish provings from around the world plus two associated remedies, and of these, few are commonly known. Consequently, this is a book to encourage the homeopath. it doesn't pretend to be a weighty tome with all the answers, but rather a lure to reel you in gently before you discover you're actually in some rather deep water. The information is, however, clear and thorough, with illustrations and some successful fish cases presented. With the gradual identification of key themes, traits and helpful insights and overviews as well as some useful comparisons of other remedies, the reader is slowly but surely becoming more attuned to this strange, drug-like aquatic world so that maybe these remedy types will no longer slip by unnoticed.
This is definitely a subject that deserves greater study and I will now be looking out for fish patients in my practice. We may have ignored them for too long, but we now know that fish are not mute: Viktoria Bodrogi has helped to give them a voice. Time to take another look at those fish provings, and this is just the book to get you started.
